The region of Kinglake was the worst affected. It had 120 people killed from the one fire. In total 173 lives were lost. The estimated energy released in total, was equivalent to 400 atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima.

There were widespread victims all across the state. The victims ranged from having burns, houses destroyed, pets killed, families members lost, other injuries and land burned.

Victoria’s weeks of prolonged drought and oppressive heat meant that there was a high possibility of a fire. The state braced itself for the worst and their nightmares became a lasting reality. Fueled by a 1 in a 1000 weather phenomenon.

The worst bushfires in Australia’s history, it caused the death of 173 lives, injury of 5000, loss of 2029 properties, the death of countless animals and the burning of over 4500 square kilometres of land. Years later, people were still coming to terms with the impacts and aftermath.
